Who We Are

Our Vision Statement:
We listen to the still-speaking God as we follow Jesus by:

  • welcoming all people to fully share in ministry
  • joyfully seeking peace and justice
  • boldly loving and serving all God's children
  • keeping our covenant to care for creation
  • moving into new life in the Spirit

We are a people of faith who affirm a living tradition in the belief that God speaks to us in the present. We take the Bible seriously, if not literally. We are a church that values and celebrates life.  We are grounded in the traditions of faith of the ancient church, the reformation church, and the congregational and evangelical churches of our denomination.

We are committed to reaching out into our community. We are a family of faith in which each member, adult and child, is valued.

As an Open and Affirming Church we are welcoming and accepting of all people regardless of age, gender, marital status, nationality, physical ability, race, socioeconomic class or sexual orientation.

Why We Follow Jesus ...

It is in Jesus that we come to know God as a loving parent. In the Bible, the Apostle Paul says that the light that is within us "illuminates the glory of God in the face of Christ". As disciples of Christ we experience God's compassionate love, are secure in our redemption, and are sustained in our journey through life by following Jesus' path.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

We believe that as individuals, and as the First Congregational United Church of Christ in San Bernardino, California, we are called to follow Jesus Christ, responding to the word and will of God by seeking both the costs and joys of discipleship as:

  • WITNESSES to the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ who boldly proclaim God's promises of forgiveness of sin and fullness of grace, courage in the struggle for justice and peace, and eternal life.
  • STEWARDS of the gifts that God has entrusted to us individually and collectively; committed to using our resources in Christ's service in meeting the challenges of the local, national, and world communities.
  • MINISTERS to those in need of God's love, justice, and mercy; dedicated to being Christ's servants in the service of others; celebrating the diversity of God's good creation by joyfully accepting all kinds of people and remaining open to and affirming of God's gifts to others.

We are confident that there is yet more truth and light to break forth from God's holy word and pray that the Holy Spirit will guide us in making the presence of the Risen Christ known throughout the world.
